Archival Narratives
Drawing from STET - books and photography’s archive, Karen Lacroix made a selection of editions which, together with curator Filipa Valladares, will withdraw images, pages and texts, establishing a set of relationships between content and container (editions of different formats will be presented in digital format). This project creates constellations formed between relationships, works, genres and archives of different disciplines. What is then proposed are new readings of these editions, authors and content, navigating STET’s book collection and exposing part of the editions, as well as a method to promote connections between otherwise apparently distinct objects and contexts.
Karen Lacroix is an illustrator and designer based in Porto, Portugal. She was a lecturer in Visual Narratives at the University of Richmond and is a tutor at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Porto in multiple courses in the Further Education programme. Among many artist residencies, it is possible to highlight the following: Porto Polytechnic Institute (Portugal), Edifício Montepio/ Porto Lazer (Portugal) and Historic Sanatorium at the Lake Edward (Canada). She works for a variety of clients such as Bright Ivy, English Touring Opera, Signum Records and Bishopsgate Institute. After completing an MA in Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art, founded Uncanny Editions, a publisher and studio exploring different modes of publication practice. The publisher frequently organises workshops in museums, as well as cultural and educational institutions such as the National Portrait Gallery, X Marks the Bökship and The Photographers’ Gallery. She is the founder and coordinator of the Illustration School, an international pedagogical platform that investigates the expanded field of illustration. Uncanny Editions’ work is represented in collections such as MoMA (New York, US), University College London, London College of Communication (UK), School of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, among others. Co-director of the research centre Shared Institute.
